Do not use our chapels for partisan politics
April 27, 2024

The Bishop of the Northern Accra Diocese of the Methodist Church Ghana, The Rt. Rev. Prof. Joseph M.Y Edusa-Eyison, has cautioned the Christian commmunity in the Diocese not to allow their chapels to be used for partisan politicking.

He was addressing the 6th Annual Synod of the Diocese during its Opening Ceremony held at the Ebenezer Cathedral, Madina, Accra on Thursday, 25 April 2024.

Rt. Rev. Edusa-Eyison addressed the issue of ethical leadership in national elections. He said, as the Church conducts election for  new bishops in some dioceses within the Connexion in April this year and also the nation Ghana holds its Presidential and Parliamentary  elections in December, the campaigns must be devoid of inter-party conflicts and violence before, during and after the elections. He called on members of the NAD and Christian and religious bodies in general, to bring to bear on the elections, their Christian and spiritual values. “As we exercise our civil rights by eschewing hate speech/language, showing love towards the opponent , it must be noted that our chapels and premises are not plaforms for partisan politicking.”, he said. Circuits and Societies within the diocese should therefore  ensure that announcements are made during worship services to the same effeect.

In an interesting response to the Bishop’s message, the Member of Parliament for the Madina Constituency, Hon. Francis Xavier Sosu, who was in the service, responded by pledging his commitment and that of his constituents to peace before, during and after the elections. He said his pledge and resolve is informed by his challengin up-bringing as a street child who probably would not have survived if the country was plunged into war or violent conflict. He therefore called on all political parties to commit to peace, since conflicts and wars deprive the people of peace and development.
